+
+The location of Stalingrad was strategically vital because it sat on the Volga River, a major transport river that allowed the Soviet Union to move supplies, food, and oil from the Caucasus to the rest of the country. By capturing the city, the Germans hoped to cut off this supply and paralyze the Soviet economy while securing their own northern flank as they pushed toward the Caucasus oil fields. Additionally, the city held immense symbolic value because it had the name of the Soviet leader, Joseph Stalin; both Hitler and Stalin viewed it as a propaganda prize. Its fall would have dealt a crushing blow to Soviet morale and potentially knocked them out of the war.
